Sophie Deloudi is a woman who celebrates women, bringing her personal style to her creations of swimwear and beachwear. Dedicated to elegance and high aesthetics, she masterfully combines architecture with geometry and femininity with innovative cuts. Her collections cater to the modern, independent woman. The following interview delves into her inspirations, design philosophy and the ethos behind her celebrated brand.
What is the story behind the creation of the Sophie Deloudi brand?
I worked in design for 20 years, collaborating with some of the biggest companies in the world. Through my experience, I learned that to be the best, you must pay attention to every aspect of your product: design, materials, construction, and communication. Each element is equally important. When I decided to leave the design field to pursue what I truly love, I aimed to create a product that could stand equally on the global market. During Greece’s economic crisis in 2012, I felt a strong desire to create something that would travel the world and proudly say “Made in Greece”.
How would you describe the essence and philosophy of your designs?
We are all shaped by our environment—our family, country, and education. I was fortunate to grow up with parents whose aesthetics were a dominant part of their lives. I was exposed to images and experiences that were rare in Athens at that time. This became part of my DNA. I have an instinctive aversion to exaggeration and dissonance, so balance and harmony are the main characteristics of my designs. Over time, I also discovered my affinity for colors and fabrics, which align with my own aesthetic vision.
Where do you draw inspiration for your collections? Are there particular themes or sources you consistently return to?
The primary inspiration always comes from the materials I choose.
“The fabrics guide me, almost as if they have a life of their own.”
Inspiration can also come from a trip, a movie, or an exhibition. When you love what you do and are constantly engaged, your mind is always on the lookout for new ideas. This happens instinctively, not through planning.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of running your own fashion label?
The most rewarding aspect is the positive acceptance from people. Receiving beautiful comments, often unexpectedly, brings immense satisfaction. When women approach me on the street with flattering remarks about my work, I feel an overwhelming joy. Positive feedback on my creativity gives me strength and happiness.
In what ways do Greek culture, heritage, and aesthetics manifest in your collections? Are there any Greek designers, artists, or cultural figures who have influenced your work or whom you admire?
Although we are a Greek company, Greekness is not the dominant feature of our design. I understand the importance of promoting and exporting our Greek heritage, but when it’s in your DNA, it speaks for itself. I love my country and am proud to be Greek, but inspiration and aesthetics have no boundaries.
In what ways do you see your designs empowering women and allowing them to explore different facets of their personalities?
The best way to gauge this is through the acceptance and loyalty of our clientele. The swimsuit is perhaps the most challenging piece of clothing for women. Many women lack complete confidence in their bodies, and the swimsuit often takes the blame. When a woman feels beautiful in one of our swimsuits, it brings immense satisfaction.
What steps do you take to maintain ethical standards in your supply chain, ensuring fair labor practices and quality production?
We are a small brand that produces based on demand, avoiding excess for commercial gain. The fabrics and materials we use come from large European companies that adhere to global standards. Quality and commercial ethics are core values of our brand.
How do you stay inspired and creatively refreshed in a fast-paced and often demanding industry?
I design one collection a year, focusing on a few genres and continuously improving them. I don’t believe in overloading myself with too many projects. This approach allows me to dedicate ample time to each collection, ensuring every piece has a purpose and adds value to the whole.
If you had to pick one favorite design from your entire collection, which one would it be and why?
It’s like asking a mother to choose her favorite child.
What’s a perfect day off for you, and how do you spend it?
Always by the sea, with good company.
Do you have a favorite travel destination or a dream vacation spot where you love to escape to recharge and gather inspiration?
Kaiafas Lake, Patmos, and Kimolos are among my favorite destinations for rest and relaxation. My favorite city in the world is Paris, where inspiration is everywhere.
