This series of ceramic lamps, designed by Giannis Mamoutzis and Iro Papadopoulou, provide illumination to both their shell and their surrounding space, creating a unique correlation between natural and artificial lighting and shadows. Holding as a basic notion the clarity of forms and materials while using the construction purity as a driving force in the objects’ compositional process, they reflect a current tendency of redefining traditional ceramic art within the contemporary design framework.
Their morphology is a result of 3-dimensional sections, as conceivable planes intersect simple geometric prisms, such as a sphere or a cube. The section point also serves as the illumination source; in this way, the light – initially embedded within the basic geometry – is channelled towards the surrounding environment. The material used is white stoneware clay, while the lack of glazing maintains the rough and stony texture of the ceramic surfaces.
