Born and based in Athens, Greece, Anna Karountzou creates raw and elegant ceramic vessels, inspired by ancient civilizations and natural settings. Following a background in the conservation of works of art and antiquities, her passion for the science of materials grew from the preservation to the molding and handling of the clay. Guided by absolute discipline, concentration, and attention to detail, she decided to create her own glazes, drawn to the tactile and functional nature of the craft. Using traditional techniques such as coiling and pinching methods, her one-of-a-kind hand-thrown pieces are inspired by places Anna feels connected with, paying homage to the earth while adhering to a more contemporary aesthetic.
“My collection “Stomata” is inspired by my childhood memories in my homeland Oia Santorini, from where I collected the stones that are integrated into the ceramics vessels. The collection consists of shapes and figures that express motion and rhythm. All combined, each one on a different tone, create a polyphonic ensemble while embracing beautifully one another. Each piece is an autonomous chapter. A single note, a different sound. My personal symphony.”
