The underlying notion behind this body of work by Elias Tsakmakis is the acknowledgement of the fact that the contemporary man is primarily a consumer and end-user but hardly ever the sole creator of the things that surround him in his everyday life. In a time highly dependent on technology, we stand – yet again – mystified and in awe not only of the still unanswered metaphysical questions of the past, but also of the works of our collective conceptual and scientific labor. With the need for specialization of knowledge and labor driven to an extreme, most end-users find that the use of appliances is not sufficient for them to grasp their inner-workings, similarly to how people in the old ages could only speculate about the workings of natural and metaphysical phenomena when using the by-products of a flawed scientific system.
As the title implies, the individual parts of this work are inspired by and dedicated to the various myths, misconceptions and misunderstandings that still plague the beliefs of modern societies.
For the purposes of this work, the artist found it necessary to use a visual language that, like the one already used by alchemical iconography, would comprise not only purely visual elements but would be further enriched by the use of symbols and digits of various systems of a much more technical nature. To this end, advantage had to be taken of the wealth of images provided by various sources freely on the web; without them, this work would have been impossible.
