In The Self Behind the Window, Dimitris Polychroniadis examines how technology shapes our vision and sense of self. Drawing on Robert Romanyshyn’s Technology as Symptom and Dream (1989), the exhibition reflects on the ‘self behind the window’—a detached observer, shaped by centuries of linear perspective and technological mediation. The installation weaves three distinct elements: archival NASA photographs capturing Earth and the Moon as abstract, enigmatic landscapes; geometric Space Frames, referencing Alexander Graham Bell’s modular structures and the frameworks of technological progress; and song lyrics expressing doubt and insecurity, rendered in Ed Ruscha’s signature font. Together, these elements bridge the cosmic and the personal, exploring how technology connects and distances us from the world. Polychroniadis invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with the act of seeing—questioning what is revealed and what remains obscured in our increasingly mediated existence.
