Located on a steep, south-oriented plot with panoramic views to the Saronic gulf in Anavyssos, Attika, these two residences operate as a unified whole, without however loosing their independent character. In order to protect the buildings from the intense solar radiation, a metallic construction made of vertical screens supports both the verandas and the sun protection construction, along the south, east and west facing-facades. The tents can be adjusted to the sun and wind intensity automatically or manually, transforming, thus, not only the façade, but also the quality of the spaces behind it.
The buildings were placed at a distance from the main retaining wall. In between stands an open-air car park, and an outdoor passageway was placed at the upper level. This open-air aisle leads to the main house entrances through two metal bridges. The car park roofing is made out of a metal mesh, providing not only a luminous ‘underground’ car park and storage space, but also natural ventilation for the basement level. Due to the steep inclination of the plot and in order to avoid high retaining walls, a big part of the south-side open-air spaces was constructed on a cantilevered overhang, supported by the rear retaining stonewalls. Both the retaining walls, as well as the south front of the basement level of both buildings have been built with stone – product of the excavation –, in order to blend with the landscape and enhance the lightness of the structural steelwork.
