Minas Kosmidis Architects has reimagined a summer retreat on the island of Thasos, transforming a 150-square-meter stone structure into a contemporary haven for a family of three. The design strikes a balance between preservation and innovation, seamlessly integrating modern elements within the existing framework. A defining feature of the renovation is the introduction of a metal structure, discreetly inserted to support the second level while maintaining the integrity of the original stone shell. This architectural intervention allows for a spatial composition that prioritizes openness and connectivity. On the first level, an open-plan layout enhances the fluidity of the living spaces, with the staircase and auxiliary functions positioned at the rear to ensure an uninterrupted visual connection to the sea. A standout feature of the design is the kitchen, enclosed within a wooden volume with folding doors that enable it to disappear entirely when not in use—blurring the boundaries between function and form. Upstairs, the private quarters are subtly secluded while retaining a sense of openness through a glass partition, offering both privacy and a visual link to the rest of the home. The material palette—comprising natural stone, warm wood, and muted earthy tones—echoes the surrounding landscape, fostering a dialogue between the built environment and the island’s natural serenity.
