The Melanos Watchtower by Anastasiou Misseri is located on the rocky Melanos hill in the Akamas National Forest Park, Cyprus. Overlooking the biodiverse terrain of the Akamas peninsula, part of the Natura 2000 network, the tower provides panoramic views while aiding the Department of Forestry in wildfire monitoring. Designed as a prototype for future towers, the structure features a compact footprint and elevated platform, offering 360-degree views. Local materials like reinforced concrete embedded with rocks integrate the watchtower with its environment, while ensuring durability. The ground floor houses utilities including a staircase, WC, solar panel batteries, and a water tank, protected by galvanized doors. A perimetric balcony wraps around the upper level, sheltered by a cantilevered roof. The enclosed central room, constructed from cross-laminated timber, provides refuge in severe weather, with large openings maintaining clear views. Topped with zinc-clad roofing, the tower is built to withstand Akamas’ coastal conditions while blending harmoniously into the landscape.
