Nestled in the heart of Arcadia, Greece, at an elevation of 1,200 meters, MANNA emerges as a testament to the harmonious intersection of history, nature and contemporary design. Surrounded by a virgin fir forest, the retreat unfolds within a landmarked sanatorium, originally constructed in the late 1920s as a haven for tuberculosis patients seeking solace amidst arcadic woods. Inspired by the secluded location and the untouched natural surroundings, K-Studio envisioned a modern sanctuary that pays homage to the property’s historical significance. Preserving the original identity of the building while projecting a contemporary approach required surgical interventions that showcased the monumental heritage of MANNA. The result is a harmonious blend of the past and present, a place where guests can connect deeply with the roots and purity of the locus.
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed with a cozy ambiance and local treats. The Lounge area, dominated by a Bar reminiscent of the property’s healing past, offers a selection of malt whiskies and spirits. The drink menu, curated by bar manager Athanasios Katsoulas, highlights locally sourced herbs and fir honey. The open Kitchen invites participation in meal preparation, extending into outdoor areas when weather permits. Deeply rooted in the earth, the restaurant, led by Chef Athinagoras Kostakos, crafts seasonal menus inspired by Arcadian land. The annex, on the lower level, houses wellness areas that delve into the spatial qualities of being grounded, creating a cave-like retreat into the terrain. Outside, gardens by Elli Pangalou create an oasis for rest and renewal. The 32 rooms feature a timber space grid that echoes the heritage of the original elements, from iron doors to intricate detailing. This grid, reflected in terrazzo and marble floor patterns, organizes sub-areas of sleep, bathing, and dressing, maintaining a connection to the building’s roots. Manna’s material palette underwent a subtle reinvention, with a focus on maintaining, continuing and repurposing original materials. Natural finishes, textured renders, and locally sourced elements contribute to the timeless aesthetic. Metal muntin windows complement the palette, while natural finishes and vegan leathers showcase the beauty of aging gracefully. Communal spaces and secluded areas coexist, offering opportunities for both community engagement and introspection. Additional outdoor activities, including hiking trails, promise a fuller experience in the Arcadic landscape, creating a destination that transcends time.
