Located in Kypseli, “Mosaico” apartment was designed by Elli Athanasiadou and architectural practice Space is around us, paying homage to the apartment’s well-crafted mosaic and parquet floors, while rethinking its original layout through a contemporary prism. Using the mosaic floors’ main color palette, the team created a moodboard of small, yet crucial interventions.
As the architects describe, “an entrance functioning as a filter and threshold for this 95sqm apartment guides the user to a dining/working space that is merged with a living/library space through timeless, yet functional sliding wooden-glass doors”. A second hall connects private and communal areas with the restroom and the kitchen. The apartment features bespoke furniture, focusing on the preservation of the space’s original values in a flexible and respectful way. The original countertop and sink made of Dionysou marble in the kitchen have been kept intact, developing the whole food preparation area around it. Desaturated orange and lilac colours have been used for the kitchen cabinets and table tops. A curvy custom table has revived a dark corner of the space smoothing out the acute angles of the kitchen. The same shape has been used on a smaller scale on some shelves and in the add-on handles. The restroom was completely renovated with new-built short wall dividers and a counter covered in a minimal white tile reminiscent of the 70s small-size square tiles, complemented with a desat orange seam matching the hall mosaic.
