Thessaloniki-based architecture studio Normless has renovated an apartment on Morkentaou Street, right in the historical center of Thessaloniki.
Back in the 70s, the typical interior layout of the apartment included separate rooms for both public and private spaces. Maintaining most of the interior masonry, the kitchen was relocated and functionally integrated into the living room in an open-plan space, while in its place the architects designed a new space to be used as a guest room or office. The room communicates with the entrance of the apartment through an internal wooden window. The rest of the rooms remained in their original layout except for the second bathroom which was integrated into the master bedroom along with a dressing room. The design philosophy was based on the use of natural materials such as oak wood in all custom-made constructions and natural mortars of the company Kourasanit. The application of the mortar in natural earth tones on most floors, masonry, doors, and ceilings gives a special character, homogenizes the spaces, and emphasizes the wooden constructions of the apartment. Acting as an escape from the city itself, the apartment offers a calming sense away from the hustle and bustle of the streets.
