Within a post-war polykatoikia in Amerikis Square, KAN atelier transformed a 75-square-meter apartment into a harmonious blend of past and present, light and texture. At the heart of this refurbishment is a unified living area flooded with natural light, achieved by removing dividing walls to enhance connectivity and openness. Preservation of the apartment’s history was key, with original hardwood and marble floors retained alongside integrated terrazzo balconies and a repurposed marble kitchen sink. Exposed concrete pillars and beams added an industrial touch, while bespoke carpentry elements, such as storage-closet space and sleek kitchen cupboards, were seamlessly integrated. Reflective white and dark stained finishes played with light and shadow. Additionally, an eco-friendly expanded cork ceiling provided insulation and unity, paying homage to the building’s architectural heritage. These elements combine to shape daily life, with rough textures contrasting soft ones, shadows dancing with reflections, and shapes blending into surfaces, offering a new urban living experience.
