Italian architect Federica Scalise has converted a former storage room in Athens, just a few steps from Alimos beach, into a tiny, modern, and bright apartment with a private garden. The 23-square-meter unit was completely modified, while the bathroom was kept in its original position. The kitchen was moved and combined with the living room to create a continuous, open-plan space that expands in the outdoor area. Keeping the main room as spacious as possible, the new linear kitchen functions as a flexible space available for dining, studying, working, and relaxing with a garden view. The kitchen also works as a wardrobe, a library, and a storage space. A new wooden wall divides the living area from the two smaller private spaces, cladding the bathroom wall and creating a separate bedroom; here a stepped platform elevates the bed to create a feeling of enclosure and allows a hidden storage area under the bed. Bright and simple surfaces bring out the materiality of the pine wall in the bedroom. The pistachio green floor aims to create a continuation with the outdoor nature, while the blue tones recall the colors of the sea nearby, emphasizing the character of a ‘summer house’ in the city.
