Tasked with transforming a part of the ground floor of a post-war Athenian polykatoikia into a contemporary eatery, KAN Atelier brought the concept of ALLIOS to life—a modern reinterpretation of the traditional ‘kafenio’. The space is dedicated to offering culinary creations crafted from seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, reviving cherished recipes of another era. On Kerkyras Street, steeped in a century of history and lined with ancient acacia trees, visitors find ALLIOS Kafenio at numbers 17-19. This 50-square meter space captures the city’s essence by keeping its original terrazzo floor and showcasing the weathered textures on walls and structural elements. The space is divided into two areas: the main dining space and the service area, which includes the kitchen and a bathroom. The semi-open kitchen, reminiscent of traditional kafenio layouts, stands at the center of the double-height dining area. The interior stands out with carefully arranged dark-stained timber furniture in a grid pattern, blending seamlessly with the lighting design. Tabletop colors match the terrazzo floor, while new elements follow an off-white theme. During the day, natural light floods in through the glass façade, showcasing the space’s varied textures. At night, targeted lighting creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, illuminating the tables and kitchen. The space seeks to revive the inherent sense of neighborhood and social interaction, embracing the vibrant spirit of the local community.
