In this single-family house located in the area of Ekali in Athens, traditional Greek building materials are applied in unconventional ways, shaping an appropriate architectural identity – material and spatial – in a suburban context where traditional imagery and contemporary desires are fused and confused. A continuous openable glass envelope covers the south and east sides of the ground floor, allowing daylight to enter into the deep plan while defining at the same time a large open living area, transparent towards the garden. The main building volume is covered by a pitched double-curved roof, clad with conventional ceramic roof tiles. The cladding cascades down the surface of the north wall, creating a rainscreen that contributes to the environmental performance of the house and conceptually to the visual impression of a seamless protective blanket. The main materials used and the construction methods are white plaster, marble, stone veneer and wood.
