This apartment renovation in Exarchia, Athens, transforms a typical 1970s “polykatoikia” residence into a bright, open, and thoughtfully designed home. Overlooking Pedion tou Areos park, the project blends bold new elements with original features, creating a balance between past and present. The redesign focuses on improving spatial flow. By repositioning the main corridor and removing partitions, the layout becomes more open and connected. The kitchen, now located near an enclosed light shaft, acts as a central hub, bringing in soft morning light and enhancing the apartment’s functionality. Curved walls and arches introduce a softer, more fluid feel to the interior, redefining the apartment’s original rigid structure. At the entrance, two curved partitions create a natural division between communal and private spaces, while a custom-built bookshelf in the living room serves as both a striking design feature and a practical storage solution. Materials and textures are carefully chosen to unify the space. Patterned floor tiles create continuity, while custom furniture and carefully selected objects reflect the owner’s global background, drawing inspiration from Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences. This renovation offers a fresh take on Athenian apartment living, blending cultural identity with modern design. By rethinking everyday spaces with craftsmanship and functionality in mind, it creates a home that is both personal and timeless.
