In the heart of Athens, a modernist landmark designed by A. Siagas has been carefully restored by architect Lara Vartzioti. The building presents an early expression of brutalist tendencies, shaped by the city’s unique topographical demands. Initially conceived as two independent maisonettes with innovative spatial arrangements, the building had undergone significant alterations over the years. Vartzioti’s renovation embraces the building’s original ethos while reinterpreting its spatial narrative for modern living. Key elements like the terrazzo floors and wooden staircase were preserved, with the latter reimagined as a shared feature. Flexible, customizable spaces were introduced, replacing the rigid floor plans, while a glass-tiled passageway links the building to the city, reflecting the original alley concept. A new penthouse, designed as an architectural index of the original structure, complements the preserved elements. The restoration balances heritage conservation with modern upgrades, including energy-efficient windows and reinforced structural elements, ensuring the building meets contemporary standards without losing its historic identity.
