Located on the island of Hydra, Greece, N&V House by ATS Architects is a summer residence that perfectly blends traditional and contemporary design. Hydra is known for its unique architecture protected by the archaeological department and architectural council, described by painter Nikos Hadjikyriakos Ghikas as “cube-shaped houses, like almond cakes dusted with rose-scented sugar.” The house features an L-shaped stone building with rooms on different levels, a stepped courtyard with an olive tree, and a swimming pool. The renovations were carried out with respect for the original architecture. Ceilings and wooden floors were restored and painted, maintaining the island’s local style. The ground floor’s red cement tiles were polished, and missing tiles were replaced seamlessly. Contemporary details, inspired by Mediterranean vernacular, are evident throughout the house. The kitchen features cream tiles, a bespoke dining table and re-claimed terrazzo tiles repurposed for the outdoor shower floor. The master bathroom showcases a blend of textures with a rough slate stone floor and smooth white Dionysus marble claddings. Traditional kitchen joinery is paired with a custom handcrafted oak table made by a local carpenter, echoing the waves of the bathroom mirror and adding a touch of lightness and playfulness.
