Project 11, is a small apartment in the area of Pangrati. Its 49m2, arose from a continuous property interchange that Athenian modern buildings went through in the second half of the 20th century.
Thus, spaces that were formerly used for the function of an undivided apartment, developed apart. Therefore, throughout the apartment renovation, the floor plan had to be reformed in a new and connective way, in order to accommodate its new residents: a new main room was created, separating the old living room, leaving a small and flexible space for the new lounge. The main room is now reformed, offering privacy by connecting with the lounge through a circular inner window and retaining its direct relation with the apartment’s balcony. This way, natural light can enter the main room and after it can pervade the living room.
The kitchen is in direct contact with the lounge area, demonstrating visual and functional continuity. It is formed as an extension, through a longitudinal booth, that ends in a lounge office. The apartment reconsideration, based on minimum intervention, is aimed at flexible ways of interfering in space and time. Therefore, the reuse and showcasing of the construction material is essential to the premise, highlighting the temporal scent of the Athenian post-war buildings: colourful mosaic floor pattern, concrete columns, wooden floor patterns and details kept untouched, with the proper technical process and the new materials selected in order to complement them.
Also, on those structural components that were rearranged, in order to develop this new spatial relation, marble surfaces were placed, illuminating the apartment’s old structure. Therefore, a new diverse floor pattern of marble, wood and colourful mosaic signs was created. In this matter, architectural interference appears as an “event”, despite a flattening process· pursuing simplicity through design, without binding prospective use of space and time.
