In SKG, Marinos Tsagkarakis recounts Thessaloniki’s transformation from a bright, extrovert and vibrant city, into an area of abandonment, disinvestment and aesthetic decline. Traditionally considered as one of the most beautiful cities in Greece, atmospheric, erotic, and vivid, Thessaloniki played a significant role in Macedonia and the wider Balkans during the 20th century. However, largely due to the prevailing nouveau riche and opportunistic culture, the city slumped sharply a few years before the country’s economic crisis, which only served to further aggravate the situation. These images depict the urban and suburban landscapes, presenting a folk, rough and sometimes surrealistic view of the city and its surroundings.
