The renovation of 1930s apartment building is an opportunity for architectural experimentation and by grabbing it, Dionisis Sotovikis and Kirki Mariopoulou came up with a contemporary and unique outcome.
The structural elements of the apartment that could not be altered (lightwells, columns, beams and windows) were coated with refined copper, highlighting the enduring value of the building. The external wall was thickened to incorporate libraries, closets and storage areas. The dark color frames of the windows were chosen to contradict the white walls, diminishing their size and at the same time emphasizing the sense of light. The use of transparent glass walls rather than solid allows for a direct view of the city from within the apartment and gives a sense of continuity for the space, aesthetically and visually. Two lightwells are the central elements of the architectural design: around the first one, a glass cube is used to define personal space, as it can either be covered by a curtain and be used as a bedroom, or it can be left exposed and become a living room. A glass spiral sofa has been placed around the second skylight, designating it as a social space.
