Athens Special book series

Athens Special #2 and Athens Special Le Tour are two personal city guides featuring Greek chef Vassilis Kallidis’ favorite spots in Athens, on an abstract map. Street photography and index-like typography aim to capture the nostalgic, slightly kitsch and decadent feeling of the city. The chef presents his recipes in a book within the main book, i.e. a recipe section created separately with its own cover, rules, grids, even page numbering. The visuals in both parts convey everyday Athenian clichés blended with a pinch of tradition and a twisted surreal feel, with great reference to the hand drawn signage. As an extra, a 2-side poster is included, which is a practical telephone directory of the shops listed, or a decorative promotional tool for the new book. In Athens Special #2, the text that was originally meant to be the prologue was used instead to create a 30 pages zine that illustrates the chef’s Athenian stories through both visuals and deconstructed typography.
