When I first arrived at Anafi, in the early hours of a day in August, I held the belief that this would be just another summer experience. In a matter of minutes, and when the sun rose behind that rock and warmed me up, I felt that I was exactly where I was meant to be. The altitude in the middle of the Aegean sea, the warm breeze and the mesmerising light calm you down to the effect that everything becomes simple. Thus, images passed effortlessly before my eyes, rather than me looking out for them. The following summer, I returned, driven again by excitement, which this time felt more intimate. Inevitably, this emancipating quality runs through all my pictures, as you can only capture when it truly surrounds you. I opt to use film, because I believe that only through its concise substance I can capture the purity of this island.
