In this project, Hara Katsiki takes various imaginary elements of a fictional future life in the city and visualizes them using animated GIFs. This old and technically outdated file format adds the dimension of time to the still image; a captured moment becomes an animated imprint of time, illustrating the artist’s vision of a future urban life.
Katsiki is extremely fascinated by old pictures, especially from the Victorian era. She breathes new life to them through her imagination, transforming them into strange and surreal worlds of ancestral memory and personal revelation. She does not always intend to tell a story or create meaning, but believes that as one looks deeper, he can find his own. “To look backward for a while is to refresh the eye, to restore it, and to render it more fit for its prime function of looking forward”.
