These wine gift boxes stand out for their distinguished and practical design since, unlike rectangular wine boxes, they have an organic form that allows them to be reused rather than be thrown away after the wine bottle has been opened: by stacking them, a wine-rack is formed. Designed by Athanasios Babalis for the Domaine Gerovassiliou, the Votrys series consists of three sizes of boxes that contain one, two and three wine bottles respectively, made of curved plywood with oak veneer, cotton string, leather and card. Their shape was chosen not only because it’s sympathetic to that of the contained bottles but also because its side view resembles that of a grape, when stacked. In addition, they have handles and can be carried like a bag, without the need for additional packaging. Oak plywood was chosen as the main material, as a reference to the oak barrels where wine is stored to mature.
The design was the result of research led by Athanasios Babalis and held in the Laboratory of Industrial Design of the TEI of Larisa, in Greece. It won the 2010 Dieline Award in the category “Wine, Beer and Tobacco”.
